In situ observations of waves in sea ice and sea ice drift near Casey Station (2025)

Published: 2026-01-28

The dataset comprises in-situ measurements of ocean waves within sea ice and associated sea-ice drift. This is the 2025 repeat deployment consistent with deployments conducted in 2021, 2022 and 2024 (see dataset ID:AAS_4506_Buoys_Casey_2021_2022_2024). In the 2025 field campaign, four OpenMetBuoys (OMBs) (Rabault et al., 2022; https://doi.org/10.3390/geosciences12030110) were deployed on 3 October 2025 along a transect perpendicular to the fast-ice edge. Ice and snow thicknesses at the time of deployment were 60-62 cm and 11-17 cm, respectively. Buoys began to break out in early November. The dataset includes 2-hourly wave spectra, along with corresponding hourly geographic coordinates (longitude and latitude). Data is provided in both MATLAB (*.mat) and NetCDF (*.nc) formats. Full variable descriptions are embedded in the NetCDF files. For the Matlab files, the following is provided for buoys 1-4, referred (IB1-IB4): time = time stamp of wave spectrum measurements in days since year 0000; E = sea surface wave variance spectral density in meters squared times seconds; f = wave frequency in Hertz; Hs = wave significant height in meters; Tp = wave period at variance spectral density maximum in seconds; modem = Iridium modem number; GPStime = time stamp of GPS coordinates in days since year 0000; lat = latitude in degrees North; lon = longitude in degrees East.
